Win a Free Copy of “100 Perfect Pairings”!

Earlier this week, Lia introduced us to wine expert, cookbook author and culinary instructor Jill Silverman Hough, who shared her tips for choosing the best wine for the Thanksgiving feast, along with her recipe for easy, yet impressive Coppa-Wrapped Dates with Blue Cheese. We love Jill’s unfussy approach to wine and food, so we’re thrilled to give away a free copy of her latest cookbook, 100 Perfect Pairings: Small Pates to Enjoy with Wines You Love (Wiley).

Win a free copy of Jill’s book, 100 Perfect Pairings: Small Plates to Enjoy with Wines You Love!

What I love about this book is the way it’s set up: Jill starts with the wines, describing the characteristics of each varietal, then offering general tips for the best foods to serve with it and small-plate recipes for each. For example, the German white wine Gewurztraminer has a spicy quality, “like cinnamon, anise, allspice and nutmeg. Baking spices. Warming spices.” Those qualities make it a great match for rich winter fare–like her recipe for Ham, Apple and Cheddar Monte Cristo Sandwiches recipe. Mmm, doesn’t that sound wonderful with a salad for a light supper after a long day of holiday preparations?

Win a Free Copy of “Sara Moulton’s Everyday Family Dinners”!

One of the best things you can do to nourish those you love is gather them around the dinner table, and to do that, it helps to have a plenty of tempting recipes in your back pocket. A copy of Sara Moulton’s Everyday Family Dinners (Simon & Schuster) can help.

Win a free copy of Sara Moulton’s Everyday Family Dinners!

Moulton may be the former executive chef of Gourmet magazine and currently the host of Sara’s Weeknight Meals on PBS, but she’s also a busy mom with a husband and two kids to feed every night. That’s why all 200 recipes in Everyday Family Dinners had to pass muster with her own family. There’s plenty in these pages for the health- and eco-conscious cook, including whole grains (Wheat Berries with Creamy Cauliflower Sauce, anyone?), an emphasis on sustainable seafood and lots of meatless fare. Busy cooks will especially appreciate her chapter of five-ingredient entrees, which include the impressive but dead-easy Sauteed Duck Breasts with Apricot-Szechuan Peppercorn Sauce..

Win a Free Copy of “Simply Ming One-Pot Meals”!

Confession time: I’ll often pull out two or three pots and pans in the course of making dinner, which is not exactly, um, efficient. That’s why I’m so excited about Ming Tsai’s new book, Simply Ming One-Pot Meals: Quick, Healthy & Affordable Recipes (Kyle Books).

This week, we’re giving away a free copy of Simply Ming One-Pot Meals: Quick, Healthy & Affordable Recipes!

Chef Ming’s latest book is filled with 80 delectable recipes. Some, like kung pao chicken with brown rice,  Thai basil shrimp risotto or beef, shiitake mushroom and broccoli stir-fry, have his signature Asian flair. Others draw from Western cuisines: garlic osso buco with celeriac, chicken meatballs with penne and tomato sauce, and panko-crusted turkey “scaloppini” with warm mango-cranberry chutney. And all are whipped up in one pan or pot, which will make after-dinner cleanup a breeze. And we all know that’s a blessing on a busy weeknight.

Win a free copy of “Putting Food By”!

Win a free copy of the new 5th edition of “Putting Food By”!

What’s old is new again, and preserving food is chic these days. But like other old-school skills, many of us need a refresher (or even someone to show us the basics from the very beginning). Putting Food By by Ruth Hertzberg, Janet Greene and Beatrice Vaughn (Plume) was first published 30 years ago and has become the classic go-to manual for home canners.

Putting Food By covers all kinds of preserving techniques: canning, freezing, salting, smoking, drying and root cellaring. And preserving isn’t just for veggies and fruits–the authors tell you how to save meat and seafood, too. This newly updated edition, just published last spring, covers the latest info on equipment, safety, ingredients and resources.

So if you want to save your end-of-summer bumper crop of tomatoes or bell peppers or whatever, you’ll want this book. You’re great-grandma would be so proud!

But, friends, you have to play to win this home-kitchen classic.

“Taste of the East”

Win a free copy of The 30-Minute Vegan’s Taste of the East (DaCapo Press)!

Always looking for exciting Meatless Monday inspiration? Curious about vegan cuisine? This week’s giveaway is for you.

Much of Asian cuisine is inherently vegan (or really easy to adapt for vegan dishes), and that’s only part of the reason why we love this cookbook by Mark Renfield and Jennifer Murray. It’s packed with 150 mouthwatering recipes, divided by country (India, Thailand, China and Japan). Plus, there’s a really cool “Fusion” section that spotlights flavors from other parts of Asia with recipes like Uzbekistani Chickpea Salad and Tibetan Dumplings. They even have directions to make key condiments, like Fish-Free Sauce.

Renfield is the founding chef of the vegan Blossoming Lotus Restaurant (originally in Hawaii, now in Portland, Oregon); Murray is an expert in vegan and raw cuisine. Many of the book’s recipes are inspired by their world travels.

We’re giving away one free copy of The 30-Minute Vegan’s Taste of the East to a lucky NOURISH Evolution member.

“The Homesteader’s Kitchen”

Win a free copy of Robin Burnside’s The Homesteader’s Kitchen (Gibbs-Smith)!

If you’re new to eating local (whether from your own garden, a CSA or farmers’ market), you’ll love this week’s treat.

Robin Burnside was an urban homesteader long before vegetable gardens and chicken coops became chic. As the chef and co-owner of Carmel Cafe in Carmel, Calif., and Cafe Amphora in nearby Big Sur, Burnside has always advocated seasonal, local fare. Her simple recipes–which run the gamut from refreshing sippers to soups, salads, entrees and desserts–boast plenty of creative touches while allowing the flavors of stellar seasonal ingredients to shine. (We love the addition of Sririacha hot sauce to the Hollandaise sauce for her Amphora Eggs Benedict.)

We’re giving away one free copy of The Homesteader’s Kitchen to a lucky NOURISH Evolution member.
