Win a free copy of the new 5th edition of “Putting Food By”!
What’s old is new again, and preserving food is chic these days. But like other old-school skills, many of us need a refresher (or even someone to show us the basics from the very beginning). Putting Food By by Ruth Hertzberg, Janet Greene and Beatrice Vaughn (Plume) was first published 30 years ago and has become the classic go-to manual for home canners.
Putting Food By covers all kinds of preserving techniques: canning, freezing, salting, smoking, drying and root cellaring. And preserving isn’t just for veggies and fruits–the authors tell you how to save meat and seafood, too. This newly updated edition, just published last spring, covers the latest info on equipment, safety, ingredients and resources.
So if you want to save your end-of-summer bumper crop of tomatoes or bell peppers or whatever, you’ll want this book. You’re great-grandma would be so proud!
But, friends, you have to play to win this home-kitchen classic.
So here’s the deal. Leave a comment here to be entered to win (important: be sure you’re signed in to NOURISH Evolution so we can find you … or sign up, if you haven’t already–only NOURISH Evolution members are eligible to win).
Lia will announce the winner in next Friday’s Friday Digest!
Good luck!
This book should be in the “tool box” of every home gardener…and those of us who have access to farm fresh produce.
I would love to have this book. I used to have a copy from way back (1970’s ish maybe?) but it got lost in a move.
I definitely need this book – Amazon here I come.
i bought some cans, but have no knowledge. i actually NEED this book 🙂
After a couple of years of canning by myself (without my mom!!) I’m starting to gain some canning confidence. Ready to start pickling and learn more about how I can preserve the great summer harvest!
This is a beautiful book! Canning is such a satisfying, nourishing process in itself…not to mention the food!
I was just at Half Price Books looking for a canning type book! This one looks neat 🙂
This one’s a classic, for sure!
I would love to try canning, freezing, etc. with all the fruit and veggies we grow year round! This book looks great!
Definitely need a good food preservation resource since I’m a virgin blog author. My resource files are organized and ready for the user friendly “what to do with your veggies” feature on the Worden Organic Farm Blog.
This book looks awesome!
Mary Beth … you’re a winner!
I’m so excited!! The nerd in me can appreciate the learnings behind the process and folks give this 5 stars in all the reviews. After having our NOURISH Evolution Smoked Sablefish, I can’t wait to smoke more! [people, it is DIVINE]. Hopefully this will help me with my overabundance of peppers too!
